PRK laser eye surgery is a procedure many surgeons will consider today even though lasik is pretty much the procedure many patients are seeking when they decide to investigate their options.

PRK stands for Photorefractive Keratectomy and was one of the earlier procedures and is still popular today. It basically revolves around the re-shaping of the corneal tissue but instead of a corneal flap being created as is the case with lasik, PRK is more about correcting the problem. Two issues it’s used for is mild myopia and astigmatism.

Testing For PRK Surgery

As with lasik, pre-screening is a very important step before surgery is considered an option. Pre-screening is not a meet and greet session – it can be fairly extensive with the patient analyzed extensively before a decision is made to proceed with surgery.

A surgeon will conduct a thorough analysis of the patient’s eye as well as a look at their history of health issues. If there are health problems then it’s quite unlikely surgery will take place. Surgeons will assess things such as tear function and refractive error measurement. The pre-screening process usually takes some time yet the surgery itself only requires about 15 minutes in the chair.

Are there risks with PRK? Yes but they are minimal. However they still exist and it’s worth learning what they are or asking your surgeon for a thorough explanation of what they involve during the initial phase. Issues such as reaction to anesthesia, infection, under correction, over correction, halos or glared vision, light sensitivity and corneal haze.

There is even a risk that a patient may endure worse vision after surgery than they had before going under the laser while older people may require some form of eye wear or protection after surgery.

If you are concerned about risk then this is a good thing and that’s why it’s highly recommended that you virtually “grill” your surgeon with questions during pre-screening. Don’t hold back any health problems you may be experiencing such as if you are a diabetic or pregnant. Extensive testing will determine your risk factor if any.

If you are not suitable for PRK laser eye surgery then your surgeon will tell you and you can be denied. This is because your well being should always be first consideration. If it’s not then look for another surgeon.

Also remember that if you are not accepted initially your surgeon will discuss other procedures which you may be suitable for. One thing to note is the recovery phase for PRK is normally a little longer than lasik and can take up to two weeks.

PRK laser eye surgery cost is tough to determine and probably the best explanation is it is similar to lasik. We’re talking anywhere from $1500-$2300 but this depends largely on your level of service required and the center you’re dealing with.

Understand that the laser eye surgery business is an ultra competitive one and bargain based prices appear to be standard. But this in itself can present problems if you are new to this type of surgery. And most people are.

What we’re getting at is you just need to be a little careful jumping on these special prices without actually doing some intelligence work on the center and the surgeons you are likely to deal with. And you definitely want to be sure before going ahead with pre-screening that the price you are looking at is what you will pay when it comes time to pay the bill.

Just make sure you know what your bottom line is going to be. Extras can be required before, during and after surgery and these may be added onto the quoted price. So to avoid shock at pay time, just be aware of what your final PRK laser eye cost will be.

Difference Between PRK And Lasik

The cost of PRK laser eye surgery is definitely important when you are on a tight budget but more important is knowing a little about the center you are dealing with and the surgeon you are using.

PRK is described as the original laser eye surgery and while some may consider it a little ancient in today’s lasik dominated world it still plays a prominent role in the industry. PRK simply stands for Photorefractive Keratectomy and used to be the most popular for or laser eye treatment.

The main difference between it and lasik is that patients who have lasik are said to suffer less discomfort while their recovery rate is a lot quicker. The recovery rate for PRK patients is not as quick but more gradual however patients with thin corneas are more likely to benefit more from PRK.

But the bottom line when PRK laser eye surgery cost is concerned is knowing exactly that when you are shopping around. Know what the all in price is before you start pre-screening.

Children with a lazy or wandering eye may start to be discriminated against by other children starting around age 6, according to research published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Here is some information about a wandering or lazy eye: • An eye that turns in or out can lead it to become “lazy”. In this situation, the proper nerve connections do not form properly and the vision from the eye may never improve. • Anyone child with an eye that turns inward or outward needs to be urgently assessed, because this may be due to a tumor, cataract and may result in permanent visual loss if not corrected. • An eye that turns inward or outward may require glasses or surgery. If the eye has become lazy, patching of the other eye may be necessary to force it to work and form proper nerve connections with the brain. Swiss researchers digitally altered photographs of six sets of identical twins such that it looked as though one child in each set appeared to have a lazy eye that turned either inward or outward. They then asked over 100 children aged 3 to 12 to look at these photographs and select which one of each set of twins they would invite to their birthday party. The participants had normally aligned eyes themselves, although they were either patients at an eye clinic or siblings of such patients. Children under the age of 6 did not discriminate between children with and without strabismus. Among the 48 participants aged 6 to 8, however, 18 did not select any child with …

www.nucleusinc.com Glaucoma is a group of diseases that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and result in vision loss and blindness. This 3D medical animation depicts the anatomy and physiology of the eye and demonstrates the different surgical techniques commonly used to treat glaucoma. The optic nerve connects the retina to the brain. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. A healthy optic nerve is necessary for good vision. In the front of the eye is a space called the anterior chamber. A clear fluid flows continuously in and out of the chamber and nourishes nearby tissues. The fluid leaves the chamber at the open angle where the cornea and iris meet. When the fluid reaches the angle, it flows through a spongy meshwork, like a drain, and leaves the eye. Sometimes, when the fluid reaches the angle, it passes too slowly through the meshwork drain. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises to a level that may damage the optic nerve. When the optic nerve is damaged from increased pressure, open-angle glaucoma–and vision loss–may result. The three common treatments for glaucoma are Laser Trabeculoplasty, Cyclophotocoagulation and Trabeculectomy. ANH00002

One of the biggest lies told by Lasik industry is that dry eye disease is an infrequent, minor, and temporary complication of Lasik eye surgery. The truth is that about one-third of people who get Lasik end up with dry eye disease, and for many the condition is serious, permanent, and untreatable. If you read the comments of Lasik victims who are supporting the efforts of Dr. Waxler to outlaw the procedure, a preponderance of people who say that Lasik has ruined the quality of their lives will cite Lasik Dry Eye Disease. This video describes some of the ways that Lasik Dry Eye Disease can diminish your ability to get your work done and to enjoy your life.
