www.nucleusinc.com Glaucoma is a group of diseases that can damage the eye’s optic nerve and result in vision loss and blindness. This 3D medical animation depicts the anatomy and physiology of the eye and demonstrates the different surgical techniques commonly used to treat glaucoma. The optic nerve connects the retina to the brain. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. A healthy optic nerve is necessary for good vision. In the front of the eye is a space called the anterior chamber. A clear fluid flows continuously in and out of the chamber and nourishes nearby tissues. The fluid leaves the chamber at the open angle where the cornea and iris meet. When the fluid reaches the angle, it flows through a spongy meshwork, like a drain, and leaves the eye. Sometimes, when the fluid reaches the angle, it passes too slowly through the meshwork drain. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises to a level that may damage the optic nerve. When the optic nerve is damaged from increased pressure, open-angle glaucoma–and vision loss–may result. The three common treatments for glaucoma are Laser Trabeculoplasty, Cyclophotocoagulation and Trabeculectomy. ANH00002

Non-Penetrating Glaucoma Surgery (NPGS) can be improved by the use of the non-absorbable implant T Flux (Carl Zeiss Meditec). The T Flux maintains an intrascleral space and the filtration can be enhanced by fixating its tronk into the suprachoroidal space (Gonzalo Munoz’s idea). NPGS is the safest surgical method for intraocular presssure control in open angle glaucoma. Its long learning curve has limited its popularity in the USA but eye surgeons, well trained in NPGS can offer complete IOP control by surgery only.

To explore the educative possibilities with the new simulator of Cataract surgery PhacoVision by the Melerit Medical AB. This simulator is very effective and powerful tool to get a deep understanding of different parts of Cataract surgery. The simulator helps the trainees to get better skills and shorten the learning curve and off course provide more risk free training for patients. The main goals are to optimize the surgical technique, to minimize damage to ocular tissues, to improve surgical skills and to avoid minor and major complications. All that in modern and secure educationssystem.
